چکیده

In this paper, a hybrid approach which combines the immersed interface method with the level set approach is presented. The fast version of the immersed interface method Li, 1995], is used to solve the diierential equations whose solutions and their derivatives may be discontinuous across the interfaces due to the discontinuity of the coeecients or/and singular sources along the interfaces. The moving interfaces then are updated using the newly developed fast level set formulation which involves computation only inside some small tubes containing the interfaces. This method combines the advantages of the two approaches, and gives a second order Eulerian discretization for interface problems. Several key steps in the implementation are addressed in detail. This new approach is then applied to Hele-Shaw ow, an unstable ow involving two uids with very diierent viscosity.

Two-dimensional Stokes and Hele-Shaw flows with free surfaces

We discuss the application of complex variable methods to Hele-Shaw flows and twodimensional Stokes flows, both with free boundaries. We outline the theory for the former, in the case where surface tension effects at the moving boundary are ignored. We review the application of complex variable methods to Stokes flows both with and without surface tension, and we explore the parallels between t...

A moving overset grid method for interface dynamics applied to non-Newtonian Hele–Shaw flow

We present a novel moving overset grid scheme for the accurate and efficient long-time simulation of an air bubble displacing a non-Newtonian fluid in the prototypical thin film device, the Hele–Shaw cell. We use a two-dimensional generalization of Darcy s law that accounts for shear thinning of a non-Newtonian fluid. In the limit of weak shear thinning, the pressure is found from a ladder of t...

A rescaling scheme with application to the long-time simulation of viscous fingering in a Hele-Shaw cell

In this paper, we present a time and space rescaling scheme for the computation of moving interface problems. The idea is to map time–space such that the interfaces can evolve exponentially fast in the new time scale while the area/volume enclosed by the interface remains unchanged. The rescaling scheme significantly reduces the computation time (especially for slow growth), and enables one to ...

A numerical scheme

Many moving boundary problems that are driven in some way by the curvature of the free boundary are gradient flows for the area of the moving interface. Examples are the Mullins-Sekerka flow, the Hele-Shaw flow, flow by mean curvature, and flow by averaged mean curvature. The gradient flow structure suggests an implicit finite differences approach to compute numerical solutions. The proposed nu...
